Electronic-duo Budaya, Maya Piña and Tulio Almaraz, reimagine Ely Guerra’s 1999 single “Tengo Frío” while paying homage to the Mexican artist. The duo dress the track in a tech house and UK Garage production while keeping intact the soul of the original version. Guerra returns to “Tengo Frío” and lends pristine vocals which melt flawlessly with Piña’s.
While Budaya’s version sees the tempo at a faster pace, the track’s longing is very reminiscent of its original iteration 25 years prior. Contrasting the beats with somber lyrics moves the shadow of isolation to its different peaks: complete solitude and masking. Each version speaks to a different part of loneliness with the latter inviting listeners to look into the masks we wear in public while looming into a darker shade of movement.
The new version’s skin is still delicate as it searches for more than conditional connections. The melancholy undercurrents highlight singular beats that are akin to racing thoughts or an anxious heart—an attribute that is seen clearly in the accompanying video.
