Vivir Quintana ‘Era Él O Era Yo’

Mexican artist Vivir Quintana recently released the video for “Era Él O Era Yo” taken from her last album, Cosas que sorprenden a la audiencia, released earlier this year.

The album consists of ten corridos which are based on true stories of women who were criminalized by the judicial system after defending themselves or who were resisting gender-based violence. On “Era Él O Era Yo,” Quintana spotlights one of these women in a poignant narrative asking the worth of liberation of a woman at the cost of freedom in society.

The track is told through the style of a corrido with a contemporary fusion of ranchera as Quintana’s rich vocals expand with pride, yet ache with a collective sadness. The artist’s vocals are resilient on the hook and move with hope to be acknowledged throughout the track.

Bringing this sentiment and story to the screen, the track unveils a powerful video directed by David Pablos. Starring Mexican actress Fernanda Castillo, choreographed performances represent the struggle and the journey’s isolation. It highlights the mental anguish that represents each line that time paints cruelly on the face–with the only crime being refusal to submit. It’s a stunning visual that touches on a global issue, transcending language and opening up a much needed conversation.

Vivir Quintana will also be performing in Los Angeles, Sunday September 14 at Skirball Cultural Center for Zona Libre from 6:15-7:15pm. The event is free and more information can be found HERE.
