The Who are currently on their “The Song is Over” farewell tour and it hit NYC on Saturday for a show at Madison Square Garden. “This is the 36th time we’ve performed at Madison Square Garden,” Pete Townshend said, “and it probably won’t happen again.”
Townshend, Roger Daltrey and the rest of the current lineup of the band (including new drummer Scott Devours), delivered a crowd-pleasing set of classics, including “Baba O’Riley,” “The Seeker,” “Pinball Wizard,” “I Can’t Explain,” “Substitute,” “Eminence Front,” “My Generation,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Generation,” and more. They also played “Long Live Rock” for the first time since 2014. (Watch video of that below.) You might expect “The Song is Over” to be the final song of the night, but it was second to last, followed by Peter and Roger performing “Tea & Theatre” acoustic as a duo.
Will this really be it? They’ve had farewell tours before and Pete did say probably. Stay tuned.
This tour has surprising and cool openers, and at MSG it was Feist, whose short set included “1234,” “I Feel it All” and “My Moon My Man.

In other Who news, the band just announced a Super Deluxe Edition box set for their 1978 album Who Are You. It includes new Atmos and stereo mixes of the album by Steven Wilson and features 71 unreleased sessions, including demos, rehearsals, an unused Glyn Johns mix of the album, a 1979 live album, and more. It’s out October 31: preorder here and check out the tracklist and a trailer for it below.
Still more news: Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia: A Rock Ballet will get its NYC premiere at the New York City Center from November 14-16. “QUADROPHENIA is the only Who album that I solely composed and produced, and the movie that followed in 1979 launched the careers of some of the finest young actors of the time,” says Pete Townshend. “In 2016 Rachel Fuller agreed to create an orchestral score of the album. When I first heard a demo of this version, without vocals, my first thought was that it would make a powerfully rhythmic and emotionally engaging ballet.” Tickets go on sale September 11 and you can watch a trailer for it below.
