Although her debut album, Animaru, was released in May via Bayonet Records, Brooklyn-based artist Mei Semones is back with more on her newest single, “Itsumo.”
Similar to the previously released full-length project, the new single also shows how Semones is unafraid to blend genres effortlessly, swirling them together under the guidance of a clear singer-songwriter vision.
“‘Itsumo’ is the first song I ever wrote and recorded on a nylon string guitar,” said Semones. “For me the song is about learning to be strong, and the strength that music has given me.”
For a song all about the passion and confidence that music has instilled in Semones, it’s only right that its influences are varied and show a wide spectrum of styles. It’s apparent from the start that she has bossa nova on her mind during the songwriting process, with the instrumentation evoking likely influences such as Caetano Veloso and Stan Getz.
At the same time, there’s no mistaking Semones’ imprint on the song. Like a sneaky assassin, the calm guitars and strings slowly shapeshift into grunge-heavy riffs matching Semones’ change in lyricism and vocals.
It’s like a magic trick performed in real time, never confusing for the sudden change and instead continuing her reign over 2025. And considering how rare it is for a multi-faceted singer-songwriter like Semones to start the year with a strong record like Animaru, there’s no reason to doubt future releases will be just as compelling.
