Australian artist Georgia Knight hailing from Naarm (Melbourne) follows up the dark waves of “Desire” with “Mingle,” the second single from the artist’s anticipated debut album Beanpole due October 31. Pre-orders are available now via Bandcamp.
“Mingle” completes the seduction heard from “Desire” in subtle and shadowy fragments. Knight utilizes empty spaces on the track to her advantage and builds anticipation in sound. It becomes a desire you crave to bathe in and equally drown, only justified by its accompanying video that captures a chill dancing across your spine so eloquently.
Knight’s signature autoharp leads the production to a watery texture of dark pop and trip hop inspiration. It lingers in sound, casually, akin to its lyrics which disarm a listener upon each listen: “I covet your smile/I covet your touch/I coveted you under cover, felt I needed you so much/Let’s mingle/Let’s mingle/And I’ll play the little jingle I have ringing in my head/In my head.”
Martin Sagadin and Marlon Williams collaborate with Knight for its visual companion truly doing an impeccable job conveying the heartbeat from the track. The video absorbs the empty space and allows the viewer to now sit with the uncomfortable, teetering between analog and digital, and quickly breaks the 4th wall.
“The song is a story about a seduction with a paradox hidden inside,” Knight says. “I like things that appear to submit with a manic grin. ‘Mingle’ confirmed in my mind that the autoharp could open things up, rather than shut me in a writing room with no windows or doors.”
Knight’s trajectory in music and sound is an exciting thing to witness bearing in mind the artist’s different periods of sound such as folk and alt-country — though always wistfully moving. This new era is a natural fit and we cannot wait to hear what Beanpole carries.
