Dec Serrano is the Next Step in Slowcore with New Track “love song” Off “No More Parties” EP

They’re still getting started, but LA-based production duo Dec Serrano gets lost in a dream pop daze on the bluntly titled “love song” off their new EP, No More Parties.

Although the two just began, having released their first single just under two years ago, they’ve been working on what would become the No More Parties EP. As time went on, the collection evolved into a mini album that embodied the epitome of their lo-fi quality and ‘90s dream pop fusion, a formula they had developed in a remarkably short time.

It’s apparent from the beginning of “love song” that the swirling instrumentation and gloomy lyrics create the sort of combination that leaves an impact from the get-go. But during the chorus of the track, the softly sung vocals complementing the slower pace, the line “If love is bliss, what is this hell that I live in?” encapsulates the feverish longing of “love song.”

The track’s biggest swing is the decision to let the air in between the production speak for itself, leaving chunks of “love song” void of vocals as the intentionally slow tempo allows the complicated feelings at the core to linger.

Whether it’s their cinematic visuals reminiscent of “Euphoria” or their misty yet spellbinding production that recalls early slowcore bands like Duster, the tried-and-true style Dec Serrano has developed for themselves in a relatively short amount of time is the kind that bridges between decades effortlessly.
