binki Announces New EP “Half-Nelson” with Alternative Earworm Single “Defibrillator”

Alongside the announcement of a new EP, Half-Nelson, out Oct. 24, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter binki is back with “Defibrillator.”

As the lead single off the new EP and first release of 2025, “Defibrillator” comes at a time when Baraka Ongeri, the mind behind binki, has the acclaim and recognition thanks to projects like MOTOR FUNCTION. Across his seven or so years of making music, Ongeri has enjoyed a cultlike following and success from tracks such as “Landline” and “Sea Sick.”

From the outset, the brooding guitar allows Ongeri to adopt a stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting, which lends well to the track’s alternative edge. It’s easy to say “Defibrillator” at large fits within the context of indie artists and bands from the aughts. But that would be selling short the minimalist production reflective of Ongeri’s modern sensibilities, including but not limited to the contemplative lyrics.

However, it’s the simplicity of the chorus that sneaks into your head, where Ongeri’s repetition of the title melds smoothly into the rock-tinged instrumental. By the time the song ends, coming in under three minutes, the only thing you’d want more from “Defibrillator” is a longer runtime.

Given the sheer talent Ongeri shows time and time again with each passing release, especially with a catchy single like “Defibrillator,” it’s safe to have expectations high only for them to be surpassed if and when a full-length project comes in the foreseeable future.
